Vernon Lee "Smitty" Schmidt, the son of August C. and Helen M. Steward Schmidt, was born February 10, 1926, in Arlington, Iowa. Smitty was united in marriage with Jean Ilene Jontz on December 29, 1949.
Smitty worked hard throughout his life. He was in road construction, he owned and operated Smitty's Truck Line hauling livestock, and he sold livestock equipment. Smitty was a member of the Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and mushroom hunting. Those who knew Smitty, knew that he loved to socialize and was always available for a good conversation.
Smitty died on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Careage of Newton. He was 84 years old. Smitty was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jean on January 11, 1990.
Those left to honor Smitty's memory include his daughters, Connie (Jeff) Hagerman of West Des Moines, Iowa and Marilee (Gary) Magg of Mitchellville, Iowa and his two grandsons, Brent Magg and Brad Magg of Colfax, Iowa.
