Our precious husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, George Marion Sports went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 surrounded by family after a lengthy illness. He was born July 12, 1921 in Blenheim, Marlboro County, South Carolina the son of George Washington Sports and Annie Steel Edwards Sports. Sergeant George Marion, United States Army, served in World War II and was honorably discharged October, 1945. He felt honored to serve his country. After his service, George Marion married his beloved, Nondas Matilda Lewis Sports. Together they had three sons, George Jr. of San Diego, California, Larry Richard of Arlington, Texas, Michael James of Keller, Texas and three daughters, Sallie Ann Sports Aschan of Marshalltown, Iowa, Patricia Lee of Addison, Texas and Marion Kay Sports Stayskal of Kennington, Michigan.
He was wholeheartedly devoted to providing his siblings, children and grandchildren the opportunities that were inaccessible for him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, yet we are assured and thankful to know that today, he is walking tall again, among the giants in heaven. The family wishes to thank all the physicians, nurses and caregivers who gently cared for our precious husband and father. George Marion was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Hattie Sports and step-brother, Albie Sports.
George Marion is survived by his wife Nondas, his children, George, Jr., Sallie (Carl), Larry (Pat), Patricia, Marion (Greg) and Michael (Sherri), his grandchildren, Major Shawn Aschan (Chantel), Shane Aschan (Trish), Christina Sports, Chelsey Sports (Layton), George Scott Sports, Bryan Van Wyk (Diane), Breanna Stayskal, Kelsey Sports and Lindsay Sports, his great grandchildren, Lauren, Wyatt, Morgan, Joey, Emma, Derrick, Bodie and Tayteum, his sister-in-law, Mary Sports of Georgetown, South Carolina and grandpuppies, Cody and Abby.
Because God sent His Son to die for the sins of the world, George Marion is with our Lord. He loved his Lord and Savior. George Marion was a loving and caring father. He was courageous and cheerful in adversity and beloved by all those he touched. George Marion loved his family, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren and a multitude of friends.
The family will be receiving friends Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 1:00 - 2:00 pm at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The will be a celebration service conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday by Pastor Randy Mason. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery Veteran's Section.
The family requests in George Marion's memory that you honor someone you love with flowers and a hug today. Memorials may be left in his name.
