Obituary of Cyril "Charlie" James Hawkins

Cyril "Charlie" James Hawkins, the son of Melvin and Sharron (Wetherell) Hawkins, was born October 1, 1971, in Des Moines, Iowa. He has an older brother, J.R. and a sister, Sherri. Charlie graduated from the Newton Sr. High School with the class of 1990, and had attended Morningside College. Charlie loved life and helping others. As a repairman for Randa's Appliance and currently as the owner of Charlie's Appliance Service, he worked hard and often after hours, to help longtime clients. Charlie enjoyed helping coach Newton Football, Newton Wrestling and Newton Softball. He was always fixing things and enjoyed ice fishing and hunting. Charlie was a member of the Newton Elks Lodge and the Izaak Walton League. Charlie died on Saturday, June 1, 2013, in rural Mahaska County, Iowa. He was 41 years old. Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Hawkins; his grandparents, Milton and Julia Hawkins and Ralph and Violet Wetherell; his stepfather, Lawrence "Larry" Hervey and numerous aunts and uncles including a special aunt, Carol Culp. Those left to celebrate Charlie's life include his mother, Sharron Hawkins Hervey of Newton; his girlfriend of 13 years and her two children, Rhonda Thomasson of Newton and Jill Thomasson and Drew Thomasson; a god-daughter, Caroline Cool; his sister, Sherri Smith of Newton; his brother, J.R. Hawkins of Newton; a step sister, Jann Smith of Newton; a step brother, Terry Hervey of Newton; a special niece, Danelle Brown of Newton; and his many friends. Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 7th at the American Legion, Newton Post #111. The family will greet friends following the service until 3:00 p.m. at the American Legion. Memorials may be designated to the Newton Senior High School Athletic Department or in Charlie's name and may be left at the American Legion or at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home.
