I have known John, and he has been a good friend since he was in 7th grade. We were in the Boone High orchestra. We also kept a close relationship as he worked for my cousins, Harold and John Switzer, in their Newton furniture store. John was so eccentric, but it was always with great humor. We had many fun times with the fact that his father was mayor of Boone, and his mother was a Maytag. I had hoped to visit him, and it was a shock that he went so fast. I'm sure he is entertaining many folks in his new location. He will be missed. There will never be another John.

John was most helpful to others seeking their family histories. For example, he introduced me to using land records, which proved to be a great source. And he always found time to help, even when he wasn't feeling up to par. I was glad to know him.

John Daehler, A man that was like my step-father, has passed away. We went to get his grocery. Pay his bills. Get our hair cut together. Spend time talking at his house every week. I am sick to my stomach and it has not fully hit yet that he is gone. I Love you,John!!! I will miss you the rest of my Life!!! I learned so much from you,John, and I will never forget you, or what we did together.

So sorry to learn of John's passing. I Talked to him a couple of weeks ago and he was so up beat about his progress at the VA Rehabilitation Hospital. Last time we came to Newton he was in GREAT spirits, had a nice evening dinner and shared several Maytag stories! As we all knew his passion for family and Newton History. You will be truly missed!!! I have been friends and known John for most of my life. Besides being our neighbor for awhile when I was 3, he worked many years at Dad's furniture store. His kindness, caring, interest in so many things, and sense of humor will be greatly missed! I will miss our hour long phone calls and hearing about my favorite town!! There will be a missing piece when I come to Newton in June for my reunion. It just won't be the same without a visit with John. After seeing him in the VA last December, I am happy knowing that he is no longer suffering. He hung in there like no other, but it certainly was not a quality of life for him. May his memory live on in all who knew and loved him. He was one of a kind! Luv ya, JD!
