Mary and her family moved away from my home town of Lester Iowa in about 1958 or 59, Our family's were very close, my Father Duane had a lot of respect for Arnie and they got along well. My Mother Kathleen and Mary were the best of friends. Both our family's had four children. We knew each other well, played together all the time.
After not having seen Mary and her family for some fifty years I happened to get reacquainted with them perhaps five years ago. The years dropped away, it was so good to see and visit with them again. Mary told me of her and my mother at my Mothers urging taking bridge lessons in Rock Rapids our county seat.
As Mary a few years junior to my mother told the story, " we were in the car going to learn bridge when your Mom turned to me and said," " we can do this Mary, we can learn how to play". Two excited young lady's taking a break from the ho hum of house work and raising their family's to go on an adventure, to learn something new. I was tickled to read in Marys obituary here she still played bridge or at least did as long as she was able. I suspect the four of them are playing, what do they call it, a rubber, now, coffee and some treats close by. My God but how I miss them all.
I might add not having seen Carolyn for some 55 years we took off right were we had let it off. It seemed and though someone all those years ago had programed us, I suspect Mom and Mary did, and despite the passage of time we were still in sync like two chronographs placed on separate ships sent around the world one headed east the other west.
Mary was a good woman, the very best, she made the most out of her life, touched everyone she met. She also made very good apple pie.
