We go way back, starting with Eighth grade graduation when John was the smartest kid in Jasper County - literally. We were fellow grads of NHS in 1941 and worked together for Alumni reunions through the years. So enjoyed working with him in the Park Centre Residents' Assn. He was our first President and hard to follow - he left big shoe prints. I and all his friends here at P.C. will miss him greatly, his smiles & many hugs. "You were the best, John!"

It was my honor and pleasure to know John first through Newton Manufacturing and later working within the community. He never met a stranger, had a quick smile and hug and was one of the greatest person you could ever know. He was always fair and honest with his staff. God picked a great angel when he picked John.

The McConeghey Family,
I got to know John through Rotary and really enjoyed talking with him and getting to hear some of his stories. My dad always talked about the days of him at Coast to Coast and John at Horn's Shoe store....good times! Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and may the memories you all hold so dear of John bring smiles to your faces when you think of him. Take care....

A trip back to Newton will never be the same. John was always game to go to lunch or dinner, watch a game on TV or just discuss the good times that we had when we were fellow merchants in Newton. John was #1 special person in our book and treated Barb with every respect when she worked for him at Newton Manufacturing.
John will be missed.

Dr. Paul Ruggle posted a condolence
John was one of my first patients in Newton and a good friend. About 25 years ago he served me dinner at a fundraiser just weeks after I sent him to Des Moines for open heart surgery. He amused me with his original limericks about Parkinsons Disease and once created a crossword entitled "Struggle with Ruggle". I visited him at his Park Center apartment last year we chatted about his grandson doing a surgical residency. He was genuinely a good guy.

A life well lived. Being in John's company always included laughter, shared interests, and warmth. John seemed the perfect "Dad" always interested in all the current dramas and hilarity of life in a home that oozed WELCOME. His hugs, jokes, and joie de vive have inspired me and made everyone who had the privilege to know him better for the honor.

It's been my privilege and joy to have had John McConeghey as my father-in-law since I married his daughter Nancy in 1973. John is an exemplary person, always wise, compassionate, generous, and loving. John's spirit was so positive and strong. He had that special twinkle in his eye, plus the best sense of humor of I've ever known. I feel truly blessed to have had John in my life these past 37 years. I love you John. Roger

The first word that comes to mind when I think of my Uncle John is 'generosity'; a close second is 'humor' -- and so he left his footprint in the world.

John was truly a great man who had substantial and positive influence on Barb and I. We knew him as a shoe salesman, successful businessman, JayCee friend, bridge player, golfer, racquet ball player, tennis player, poker player, and everyone's favorite story teller. John never forgot a story and could tell you the first one he ever heard! We had so many fun bridge trips and trips to the horse races with Bonnie and John that will never be forgotten. We will miss him, also, more that anyone could know. Good friends and great parents. We are so sorry to miss the celebration of John's life. May god bless all the family which includes Roberta, who became a great companion in later years. Love and miss you all. Wayne and Barbara Creagan

What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful man, husband, father, grandfather. This tribute reminded me of what was my own father's final realization and the thing that mattered most to him in the end. "We really did have a lot of love, didn't we!" Yes, John, you really did have a lot of love. Just look at the amazing family you created. Thank you for the memories and the difference you made.
