So sorry to hear of Leland's death. I worked with Leland for a few years on the Central Iowa Investment Council. Always enjoyed him. I know he very active in many organizations - giving of his time and energies for so many community endeavors. He'll be missed.

Presbytery Health Task Force posted a condolence

At our Health Task Force held at United PC yesterday we remembered fondly Leland and each of us at the table had worked in some capacity with Leland in the ministry of the presbytery. We are deeply indebted for his witness of leadership and are reminded again of the priesthood of all believers. In our prayers yesterday, we thanked God for the life of Leland and for all he did for so many. May you be comforted by the appreciation so many held and will always hold for Leland. No doubt many of the memories we, as Colleagues of Leland,in Des Moines Presytery have will sound similiar. He was a man of his word, a colleauge of deep faith. He always brought a smile and sense of humor to the work he did with so many of us. Thank you for sharing him. His presence will be missed, but his witness to Jesus Christ will live on. Thank you and may you find comfort in the Faithful witness he shared in Community and Church. Peace

As a former Sugar Grove school and area resident and neighbor of the Smith's, I wish to give you my sympathy. Leland was someone I always looked up to and especially in the Grange movement as my parents were loyal longtime Grange members and also Masonic members. We always admired Mary and Leland's father and mother too. Mr. Smith senior, was an outstanding Grange member and contributor for the farm/country life movement also. To the family of Leland Smith --I want to let you know how much I appreciated Leland and enjoyed our efforts together in the Presbytery of Des Moines. Leland could always bring forward a wise word and keep things focused on what needed to be focused upon. His affection for his beloved town of Newton was what came through so clearly and completely for him. The city has lost a sincere advocate and our presbytery is deeply indebted for his leadership. As a family, I know you will miss his presence and his rock-centered approach. May you be blessed and comforted in this time of loss as together we remember one to whom our Lord can proclaim, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
