I never had the good fortune of meeting Evan--I wish I had. Everyone who has talked to me about him has said the most wonderful things about his tremendous character and good heart.
Having had the pleasure to work with Evan's dad the last two years coaching track, it is apparent to me what an outstanding young man Evan must have been. John Freeman is such a good man who embodies class and honor. No doubt Evan possessed these qualities and many others, too.
No words can express the sorrow in our hearts for your incredible loss. Parents should not bury their beautiful and precious children--no matter the age.
My wife Shellie and I send our warmest thoughts and sympathy to Evan's family. We are so very, deeply sorry for your loss.

My heart and prayers go out to the Freeman family, I remember the last time I saw Evan was around the time he was starting training to be a pilot. I didn't know Evan in life, but feel that I am connected with him very much. You see, we live very near where Evan went down. We feel that this remarkable young man, and pilot, did an outstanding job of avoiding further tragedy. He was as nearly perfect as he could be in how he handled the situation. Some would say too perfect.
I was up that morning and heard nothing, and my dogs didn't react to anything.
I just wish I'd had the opportunity to help Evan in some way that morning.

I knew of Evan, through my sons, his parents and various school activities. I know he was fun loving, handsome, charitable, considerate and a hard worker. All of those qualities make a perfect son/husband. Evan was the first one to stop in an ice storm west of Newton, offering help to my son/Joseph (1 yr younger), who had just gone in the ditch. Joe had just gotten off work at Hy-Vee West, it was dark, and I don't remember what Evan was doing, but he was driving a Blazer, as was Joe. Evan recognized Joe's blazer and stopped to help. Joe ran cross country with him too and said he was a "nice guy", which was important to an underclassman. There was always much "excitement in the air" when Cindy and I talked of our sons. Evan will be greatly missed as he had many more years to live and many more accomplishments to experience. To be able to remember him as a happy, hard working young man, doing what he enjoyed is most important, as some people never achieve that level. His life will motivate others to better themselves. His happiness and achievements are a reflection from his wife, parents, brother, grandparents, etc. He will be looking down from heaven smiling at his family.

Evan,
As a fellow pilot and co-worker, I truly enjoyed working, training, and flying with you. I will miss passing you over Cincinnati every night. I will miss seeing the proud look on your face as you meticulously care for N7472N. But most of all I will miss your quiet, pleasant demeanor with that ever present smile.
Thank you for allowing Gaston to fly with you and for being so generous with your time in teaching him instrument skills. He so enjoyed flying with you. As his father, I never worried about his safety and knew he was receiving the best instruction around.
The skill and professionalism you demonstrated on your last flight is truly incredible. You did everything right. I don’t know of another pilot who could have done what you did. With barely sixty seconds to find a safe landing area, maneuver the aircraft clear of homes, line up on the beginning of a fairway, lower the landing gear and declare an emergency, would have been an amazing feat in daylight; you did it in the darkness of night! If it hadn’t been for one tree the landing would have been a non-event. I am honored to have flown with such a skilled pilot.

My Dear friend Evan, you are the definition of "the good die young". You did all you did well!
You are of few men who have the drive, discipline, capability and intellect to reach their goals/aviation goals at such a young age. You did reach your goal in aviation. Kudos to you!
Part of what enamored me to you was that when you worked at Capitol AIr and had no student-flights you would go to the maintenance shop and help Tom work on planes for no compensation. The other thing that enamored me to you other than your great personality was that regardless of your income you always wanted to pay your way. Man that speaks volumes of your character.
You flew N7472N perfectly! You Sir, did it right! Had it not be for an errant branch, we would be continuing our conversation about which house to buy. I love you, I miss you!

Evan was the kind of man that any woman would want for a son-in-law. He loved Natalie with all his heart and made her see the strength that she possessed inside. He was goal oriented and driven, and always set his sights on the future while being realistic enough to prepare Natalie for the possibility of living without him if something ever happened. My heart is broken that this came true. Natalie loved him completely and it was evident that they were crazy about each other. We were thrilled and very proud to call him our son-in-law. He was a Wonderful pilot and an awesome man and I will miss him always.
The outpouring of love and concern for our daughter and Evan's family has been tremendous and it is evident that Evan was very loved and well respected. He deserved it. Our lives are forever changed because his path crossed ours and we will do our best to honor his memory. We love you Evan.

Natalie, I am sorry I didn't get the chance to meet Evan. The stories and pictures are a wonderful tribute, he must have been a wonderful person. I can't believe all that he accomplished at such a young age! Even though I did not know Evan, I can imagine that he is proud of your strength and grace during this most difficult time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I have only known Natalie and Evan for about a year and a half, but in that time Natalie has grown to be one of my great friends. I know Natalie loved Evan very much. She always had a sparkle in her eye whenever she spoke of him. We would have lunch together and talk of the qwerky things that Evan was drumming up and how it drove her nuts. I would just smile because I knew that no matter what he thought of next or how crazy she thought it was, she would just laugh and support him all the way. Though I did not know Evan's parents, I can only hope that they have solace in knowing that their son, while tragically taken at such an early age, touched so many lives with his genuine character, attitude and personality.
I will miss Evan and the sparkle he brought to this earth, but I rest a little easier knowing that he lived his life to its fullest with the time he had. We should all hope to aspire to be as remarkable a human being as he was.
May God bring comfort to your family in your time of sorrow and grief. I love you Nat and am here for you always. ~Amanda

John, Cindy and family,
Words cannot express how deeply saddened to hear about the loss of your son, Evan. When I worked with Cindy, she always talked about Evan and his aspiration for flying. Cindy was so proud of Evan and his accomplishments as a pilot. As all moms do, she did worry about him. I never knew Evan, however, Cindy and John, you can be proud knowing your son fulfilled his life-long dream. Natalie, my heart goes out to you too. May everyone who knew Evan be touched by his inspiration and motivation to live your dreams as God has intended for all of us to do. May this light of candle be a token of peace. May God comfort and give you strength now and the days to come. God Bless!
My sincere sympathy to all,
Renee Hahn, former co-worker of Cindy Freeman

Living in the blue house, Evan and Nat... from day one when I met him, I knew he was a great guy. The way Natalie's smile brightened at just the mention of his name made those around her know how special he was as well. My heart goes out to Natalie and Evan's family and friends.

To Evan and Natalie's families and friends: We did not know Evan but after seeing his photo tribute and video and reading all the memorial candles, we have learned so very much about a remarkable young man who left us all too soon. In addition to all the wonderful things said about him, we want to add that to us he is a hero. He somehow kept all of us in Indian Springs Golf Community out of harm's way and for that we will always be grateful. We will never forget him. Our deepest condolences to you all.

Dear Natalie;
No one can fathom the depths of your sorrow and lonliness at the lost of this tremendous young man. He was one of the greatest I have ever had the privilege to know in Flight Operations at the University of Dubuque. You have no idea how heavy our hearts are but we are storming heaven for you and his relatives. I would give anything to be able to attend his funeral Mass but it is just not in the cards.
Take comfort in the fact that you more than anyone knew what a great guy he was and shared the best part of his life where he was truly living his dreams.
Good night, Sweet Prince - enjoy Christmas in Heaven!!!
Please intercede with the Blessed Trinity for those who must go on without you.
God bless you all.

Evan, you were my best friend and soulmate. We shared so many amazing memories and you will always hold the key to my heart. You always knew what to say and could always put a smile on my face.I will miss your sincere smile and your big brown eyes that would melt my heart everytime you looked at me. You always pushed me to be a strong independant person and were always pushing my buttons just enough to get me motivated. I always looked up to you and was simply amazed at how perfect of a man you truely were, I really don't think there was anything you could not do. I will miss everything about you even the little things that drove me crazy. I am so proud of you and I promise to you that I will continue to live for the life we aspired to have together. You were a remarkable man and I hope to someday make you as proud of me as I am of you. Rest in peace my dearest husband and someday we will be together again. I love you.

My Darling Boy,
I will forever hold in my heart that AMAZING GLOW whenever you would take me flying, the thumbs up whenever you would power up that engine and the smile that assured me that this is what it's all about. You aimed for the stars, and Sweetheart, you were right on target. You never liked it when I would worry even though I told you that God gave me the rights on that. I worry no more for you but love you for all eternity.

Evan was one of the best pilots I ever met, and an all around good person. I always enjoyed seeing him on the field, and made a point of talking to him whenever I got the chance. He was always in a very pleasant mood and would answer any and all of my endless questions about aviation. You could just tell he loved what he did and was always happy to help others. I'll never forget the time we got to spend with him, it was truly a privilege. He will be missed always and my deepest sympathies to his family.

My Dear Son,
Ten years have come and gone. Unbelievable as well as heartbreaking. I miss you more all the time. So many changes that you would have delighted in. I know that our one-sided conversations help me get through the day. I miss you in my dreams. I miss your shoes by the door, I miss your greeting when you answer you phone...Yo!
I look forward to the time when I will be with you again. Please be ready for the biggest hug in history. I love you with all my heart and hold on tight to you in my soul.
Your Loving Mom Forever. ❤❤❤

My Dearest Evan,
This Dec will mark the 9th year without you. Not a minute passes, that my heart doesn't still break. Every day, every holiday that passes reminds us of the void you have left.
Even with moving, different surroundings, career changes, I find it impossible to set this horrendous injustice a side, and move on.
You are now an uncle twice over. You would absolutely love it. You would have been such an amazing daddy.
Please look after us, and guide us on the right path.
I can't explain the love a mother has for her sons. It is something all encompassing. It never ever fades, never declines.
All my love, my Angel.

Evan, as the 2013 Holidays are roaring toward us, I can't help but think about the time lost between us. Soon it will be 5 years since:
You came down the steps, I grabbed you by the neck and told you that you needed to know just how much I loved you.
The call on Dec 16th, when you wanted to talk to Dad, remember you were a man of few words.
The gifts we had ready for you as soon as we could see you during the Holiday season ( most are still upstairs waiting).
The unbelievable call at 6:30am on Dec 18 and the horror that followed.
The horror is still here, I can't say it's softened, gotten easier, or not so foremost in my mind, the horror only continued through the trial last year, and the lost of our dear friends Rick and Adam this year. None of this makes any since still at this time. The deep sadness comes to visit everyday, and I still talk and dream about you often.
I know you have welcomed Rick and Adam, and your Grandfathers are in your sweet company, and somehow this should be of some comfort. To say it bluntly...it doesn't .
You will be so happy that Natalie will deliver a baby in the spring of 2014, that you have a beautiful little niece that looks an awful lot like you.
Please know how much I miss you everyday and the depth of your Mom's love.
I look forward to the time when you will help me make the journey to meet God. I love you to the moon and back. Blue skies and tailwinds my Dear Son.

My Dear Son, So much has changed in 4 long years. The trail was a disgusting 3 weeks of hell, Riley went to be with you right after Thanksgiving and we just returned from celebrating Natalie's life moving on. She has married a nice man I know you would like. Now we are approaching your 30th birthday on Monday. Why was it necessary that you leave us so soon? We had so much to do, love and cherish with you yet. I miss you today like I missed you 4 years ago. I think of you so much and still cry everyday. Remember - Eye to Eye and Nose to Nose...I love you so very much! Someday please try to make me understand all of this and why God's plan is always the best. Love you everyday, Mom

My Dear Son, Sunday I know that you were with us as your Dad and I renewed our marriage vows after 35 years. You were the special intention that Mass was being said for. I am sure you were chuckling that your Dad even wrote vows. You are on my mind every day and in my heart forever. You are going to be an uncle in March and I know you are smiling about that. I am depending on your guidance and love! My Love Forever...Mom
