Viola H. Patterson Newton Funeral services for Viola of Newton, Iowa, will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements. A visitation with the family will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., service time, Friday, at the First United Methodist Church. Viola Harriet Patterson, 99, the daughter of Harry DeWitt and Emma Caroline (Holtz) Wendel, was born September 8, 1909 in Marshall County, Iowa. A graduate of the Newton Senior High School in 1928, she graduated with a degree in teaching from the State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1932. Viola taught public school for many years, in Jasper County rural schools, New Hartford Consolidated Schools and in 1947 the Newton Community Schools. She retired at Woodrow Wilson School, in 1974. On July 2, 1975, Viola was united in marriage with Fred L. Patterson in Newton. She had devoted her life to her husband, family and students. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Builders Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, Iowa State Education Association, Jasper County Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Newton Women's Club, Clio Club, R.S.V.P. and Jasper County Historical Society. Viola died on Wednesday morning, October 8, 2008 in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Fred; a sister Gladys McKeever; and her brother Wayne Wendel. Those left to honor Viola's memory include her step-daughter Jane (Steve) Arneson of St. Louis, Missouri; two step-grandsons: Donald and Mark Arneson; her nieces: Allison Bestell and Kelly Decker; nephews: Bill McKeever and Jeff Wendell; her four great-nieces and five great-nephews; a great-great niece; and her many good neighbors and friends. Memorials in Viola's name are being designated to the First United Methodist Church; Jasper County Historical Society and Hospice of Jasper County.
