Funeral service for Dorothy M. Potter of Newton will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010, at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton, who has been entrusted with the arrangements. A public viewing will be Wednesday, 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.. A visitation with the family will be held Thursday, 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. service time. In LIEU of flowers: Memorials in Dorothy's name are being designated to Newton American Legion Post #111 Nursing Scholarship Fund. Burial will be 3 p.m. Thursday, in the Community Country Cemetery near Millersburg, Iowa.
Dorothy Mae Potter, 84, the daughter of Harold and Adella (Leatherman) Busby, was born November 2, 1925, in New Sharon, Iowa. She was a graduate of the Montezuma Senior High, Class of 1943, and later graduated from Drake University, with a Degree in teaching.
On January 3, 1946, Dorothy was united in marriage with Harry H. Potter in Newton. To this union were born four sons: H. James, Bruce, Jeff and Craig. Residents of Newton, from 1948 till 1968, Dorothy and Harry moved to Colfax, Iowa. Dorothy taught public school in Colfax for 42 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of the Newton American Legion #111 Auxiliary, the Women's Club in Colfax, Nazareth Shrine, LA FEMS and Pin Club. In 1988, she moved back to the Newton area.
Dorothy died Saturday, February 6, 2010, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harry on March 3, 1983; her son H. James Potter in 2003; a great-granddaughter Chloe; her two sisters: Marilyn Busby and Janice Vander Leest; and her twin brother Donald in 1983 and a brother Leonard.
Those left to honor Dorothy's memory include her sons and daughters-in-law: Bruce (Jody) Potter of Grinnell, Iowa, Jeff (Lorraine) Potter of Newton, Craig Potter of Newton; and Diane (H. James) Potter of Waterloo, Iowa; her seven grandchildren; her seven great-grandchildren; her sister Jane Audas of Montezuma, Iowa; her three brothers: Melvin (Rosie) Busby of Long Beach, California, Duane (Bertha) Busby of Pella, Iowa and Norman (Olwyn) Busby of Orlando, Florida; and her many friends and students.
