Robert L. Smith, age 90, of 218 - N. 6th Ave. E., Newton died Saturday, August 18, 2007 at , Newton. Mr. Smith was born November 20, 1916 at Newton, IA the son of the late William W. and the late Nell V. (Van Dusseldorp) Smith. She predeceased him January 5, 2007. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1946 during World War II . He retired from Thombert, Inc. as a Owner/operator in 1980. Mr. Smith was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Newton Masonic Lodge and Elks Lodge BPOE #1270 in Newton, served as President of the Newton High School Alumni Association, Newton Chamber of Commerce, Newton Industries Club, Newton Country Club, Tall Corn Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Mid-Iowa Council Boy Scouts of America, and Polyurethane Manufacturers Association. Also he served as a director of CIRAS, Iowa Manufacturers Association, and Caster and Floor Truck Manufacturers. He is survived by one daughter: Katharine & David Hough of Bellevue, WA and one son: Walt Smith of Newton, IA Predeceased by his Wife, Katharine Smith, Sister, St. Clair Richard, Brother, C. William Smith, Brother, Thomas R. Smith Calling hours will be Thursday from Following the Memorial Service at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., Newton, IA. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 at First Presbyterian Church, 220 N. 2nd Avenue E., Newton with Rev. Tiare Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be in Merle Hay Crematory, Des Moines on Thursday at 11:00 am. Memorials may be made to Mid Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America; Park Centre Good Samaritan Endowment Fund
