Obituary of Betty June Slatton

Betty Slatton passed away Wednesday morning, October 23, 2013, at Heritage Manor in Newton, under the care of Skiff Hospice. A Families Time of Remembrances and the Internment for Betty, will be held at the Newton Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials have been designated in Betty's name or to Skiff Hospice. Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements. Betty June Slatton, 74, the daughter of James E. and Flossie (Helmick) Smith, was born December 29, 1938, near Iowa City. She had attended Iowa City and Newton Schools. On April 21, 1956, Betty was united in marriage with Franklin D. Slatton in Newton. A longtime resident of the Newton area, she was employed by the Maytag Company for twenty six years, retiring as a Production Quality Inspector. Betty had devoted her life to her family and friends, and enjoyed camping and traveling. Those left to honor Betty's memory include daughters: Sharel Simbro (and friend Denny) of Reasnor and Bertha (B.J.) Hanson (and friend Craig) of Nashua, IA; sons: Fred Slatton (and friend Susan) of Peoria, IA, Terry Slatton of Richmond, Missouri and Charles Slatton of Kellogg; her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister Opal (Merv) Yiesley of Cedar Rapids; a brother LeRoy (Jackie) Smith of Evansdale; and her many friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Franklin in 2006 and a son Frank Slatton.
