Obituary of Emeron Paul Dettmann

Emeron Paul Dettmann, the son of Paul and Kate Gessman Dettmann, was born June 20, 1918, at the family home southeast of Mapleton, Iowa. He was a graduate of the Mapleton Consolidated schools, class of 1936, and later received his degree and Masters from Iowa State University in Ames. Emeron had served his country with the 803d Field Artillery Battalion, US Army, during World War II. He came back home to teach Vocational Agriculture at Newton Senior High, for twenty plus years then with the Department of Education as a consultant on the state career education staff. He retired in 1983.
On September 9, 1946, Emeron was united in marriage with Helen Maxine Patrick at the St. John's Methodist Church in Mapleton. A longtime resident of the Newton area, he had devoted his life to his family and friends. He was a longtime adult class Sunday school teacher as a member of the Kellogg United Methodist Church and of the Newton First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Iowa Rose Society, Toastmasters and multiple organizations related to FFA on the state and local levels. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him and by all his Vo-Ag students.
Emeron died on Saturday, September 22, 2012. He was 94 years old. Emeron was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 63 plus years Helen, on July 7, 2010.
Those left to honor Emeron's memory include his daughters: Jan (Ron) Backus, Jean (Bob) Ibbotson and Julie (Sam) Parsons, all of Newton; his five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren; and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 26th at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. Friends may greet the family from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials may be designated in Emeron's name and left at the funeral home.
