Donald "Don" Fredrick Dickerson, 75, of Newton, passed away Friday morning, August 3, 2012, at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center.
Funeral services for Don will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery, Veteran's section. Memorials are being designated in Don's name, and may be left at the funeral home.
Don, the son of Carroll F. and Jenny R. (Dodd) Dickerson, was born July 9, 1937, in Kewanee, Illinois. He attended Newton schools. Don had served his country with the US Marine Corp., during Vietnam and Laos wars, Bay of Pigs, DMZ Korean conflict, serving in Okinawa, Japan.
On Dec. 20, 1958, Don was united in marriage with Donna Hawkins in Newton. A resident of the Newton area, he was a Life member of the Newton V.F.W. Post #1655. Don was employed at the Iowa Veteran's Hospital in Iowa City, and later at Snook Inn. He devoted his life to his family and friends, and enjoyed the outdoors and fishing. Don will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Donna in 2010; brothers: Robert, Everette, LeRoy and Richard; sisters: Margaret Anthony, Penny Piggott, Lela Patton and Eugenia Dunn.
Those left to honor Don's memory include his daughter Mary Ruth (Rick) Martin of Newton; foster children: Robin Irvin of Iowa City and David J. Fackler of Tiffin; two grandchildren: Jeromy Harris and Joseph Harris; and one foster grandchild, D.J.; two great-grandchildren: Malachai and Daemon Harris; his brothers and sisters: Lloyd (Barbara) Dickerson of Missouri, Charles (Martha) Dickerson of Kentucky, Michael (Sharon) Patton of Florida, William (Bobbette) Patton of Newton, Dianna (Murry) Dougan of Newton, Lois (Leonard) Lingenfelter of Monroe, Carol (George) Umbarger of Newton, Kathy (Chuck) Hewitt of Monroe; a special friend, Grandma Glori Gordon and his many friends.
