Obituary of Raymond Edmond Davies

Raymond E. Davies Baxter Funeral services for Ray will be @ 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at the First Assembly of God Church in Newton. The Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements. A Fellowship time and lunch will follow the services, at the church. In LIEU of flowers: Memorials in Ray's name are being designated. Raymond Edmond Davies, 89, the son of John Stephen Davies and Edna Irene (Sipes) Davies, was born February 6, 1920 in Engelwood, Colorado. At the age of 8, Ray moved with his family to Corydon, Iowa. He was a graduate of the Corydon Senior High, Class of 1939. Ray served his country during World War II, with the US Naval Air Corp. Following the war, he joined his parents in Newton, Iowa. On March 7, 1947, Ray was united in marriage with Velta Hopkins in Kansas City, Kansas. To this union was born four children: Cynthia, Wanda, Harold and Linda. Ray was employed by the US Postal Service in Newton, retiring as a clerk in 1977. Over the years, he and Velta have lived in Newton and then Baxter, where he raised feeder pigs, as well as working at the post office. They later moved to Lake Rathbun and Ira, retiring to an apartment in Newton and then to Baxter in 2008. He devoted his life to his family and friends, and attended the First Assembly of God Church in Newton. Ray enjoyed playing in a band and at church, airplanes, and was a pilot. He was a Ham radio operator, did woodworking, and built many of their homes. Ray died on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 3, 2009 at his home in Baxter. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons-in-law: Daryl Flora and Larry Holmes; grandson Chad Flora; a sister Violet Kelly; two brothers-in-law: Don Doane and John Kelley. Those left to honor Ray's memory include his wife of 62 years Velta; his daughters: Cynthia (J.R.) Dethrow of Baxter, IA, Wanda (John) Eatwell of Mingo, IA and Linda (Rob) Cowen of Chariton, IA; his son Harold (Conne) Davies of Ira, IA; his fourteen grandchildren and one great-great grandson; and his many friends. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Following the Memorial Service with a lunch at First Assembly Of God Church, 1029 E. 19th Street N., Newton, IA. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 at First Assembly Of God Church, 1029 E. 19th Street N., Newton with Dr. M. DeWayne Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery, Baxter.
