Clara N. "Tootie" Hunter, 86, of Newton, died peacefully Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at her home at McCann Village in Newton. Graveside services for Tootie will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 6th, at the Victor, Iowa Memorial Cemetery. There is no visitation with the family planned.
Tootie, the daughter of Judge William Newton and Clara Anna (Refer) Newton, was born January 18, 1925, in Victor, IA. She was graduated from the Victor High School, Class of 1943. A resident of the Newton area since 1950, she was employed by the Maytag Company, in the Accounting & Data Processing Department.
On April 24, 1970, Tootie was united in marriage with Harold Hunter in Des Moines. She was a past member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Post #1655 Auxiliary and American Legion Post #111 Auxiliary. She enjoyed bird watching and feeding them, enjoyed thrift stores and lunches at Mid-town Caf.
Tootie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold on Nov. 1, 2000; a brother Erwin E. Newton; and a sister Kathryn Grier.
Those left to honor Tootie's memory include a step-daughter Connie (Jeff) Hanson of LaMars; step-son Kenneth (Bonnie) Hunter of Spirit Lake; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
