Obituary of Verle James Summers
Verle James “Bud” Summers, 98, of Newton, passed away Saturday morning, November 4, 2023, at his home in rural Newton.
Funeral services for Bud are planned for 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 9, 2023, at the Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton, who was entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 9, at 10a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Palo Alto Cemetery, rural Newton, with military services by Newton American Legion Post #111. Memorial may be left to the Newton United Presbyterian Church.
Bud was born August 23, 1925, in Newton to James Israel and Hazel Esther (Snook) Summers. He was a graduate of the Newton Senior High School, Class of 1944.
On May 27, 1963, Bud was united in marriage with Patricia Jo Holmes in Des Moines. Bud had served his country with the US Navy during World War II, Feb. 21, 1944 – May 22, 1946, as Electrician’s Mate Third Class, serving on the U.S.S Enterprise. He was self-employed as a farmer for many years, and was a co-owner of Custom Gutters Eavespouting, 1975 – 1990, retiring in 2004. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, serving as Trustee and Session Member, Palo Alto and Amboy Grange, serving as Steward and Gate Keeper, a member of the U.S.S. Enterprise Association, the Newton American Legion Post #111 and he enjoyed socializing with friends.
Bud is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pat; his son David Robin Summers; a daughter Rachel Beth Summers; a grandson Jordan David (Kirstie) Summers; a sister Margaret Jeanne (Bill) Kimler; a sister-in-law Darlene Summers and his many extended family and friends.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Glenn William Summers; and a sister and brother-in-law: Marjorie and Paul Burgess; and daughter-in-law Sam Brandt-Summers.
