Vergal Marvin Briggs Jr., the son of Vergal Marvin and Arcadia Rae (McIntire) Briggs, was born March 26, 1948, in Yale, Oklahoma.  He attended Seminole Highschool in Sanford, Florida, graduating with the Class of 1965.  He served his country with the US Marines, 1968 until 1972.

   Pence – Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements.

   He was employed by the U.S. Postal Services, sorting mail.  Vergal enjoyed sharing his home life with his family.  He loved tinkering around the homestead. 

   Vergal died on Sunday evening, August 20, 2023, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center.  After several years, fighting cancer.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Ashlee; and a sister Joanna.  

   Those left to honor the memory of Vergal include his daughter Tonia (Briggs) Morrill; his sons: Jacob (Nedra) Briggs and Bruce C. (Julie) Briggs; his eleven grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; his brother Boice Briggs; his sisters: Nina, Twylla and Janetta; his nephews and nieces; and his many friends. .

    A visitation time and celebration of life will be held 2p.m. until 4 p.m., Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the Newton American Legion Post #111. A Burial and Graveside will be 1:00 p.m., in the Newton Union Cemetery’s Veteran’s Section, with Military Honors being conducted by the Newton American Legion Honor Guard.  Memorials are being designated to Vergal’s family.
