Obituary of Martha Jayne Guthrie
Martha Jayne Guthrie, the daughter of John Thomas and Martha Ann (Knapp) Robson, was born August 23, 1932, in Newton, Iowa. Martha grew up with Maytag Park in her backyard and often played house in the Maytag Bowl. She attended the Newton Senior High School.
On March 28, 1948, Martha was united in marriage with Robert Orie Guthrie Sr in Newton, Iowa. Martha worked on the farm, caring for her husband and family. She also had worked as a salesclerk in various businesses around town. Martha’s faith and serving her Lord was always first and foremost in her life. She was always inviting and taking friends to church. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano and singing in church, gardening, and spending time with her family and cooking for them. Martha was a member of the Full Gospel Church and Immanuel Baptist Church and attended Cowboy Church.
Martha died on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at the Pella Comfort House. She was 89 years old. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, Sr. on September 11, 2014; her sons, Thomas and Robert, Jr.; a granddaughter, Cindy Guthrie; her brothers and sisters, Joseph, Norman, Raymond, Wilbur, Elizabeth, Grace, Elmer, Howard, Johnny, Harvey and Mary.
Those left to honor Martha’s memory include her sons, Bert (Marta) Guthrie, Mick (Kim) Guthrie, Jeff (Trisha) Guthrie; her daughter, Laura (Joe) Madden; her daughter-in-law, Debra Guthrie; her grandchildren, Tommie, Jr., MayLin, Chad, Jason, Bryan, Katie, Chris, Kari, Michelle, Melissa, Marc, Shawna, Jaynie, Robbie; her numerous great grandchildren;. her dear friend, Betty Westbrook.
Private family services were held. Memorials in Martha’s name may be designated to the Pella Comfort House.
