James Joseph Horn, 94, of Newton, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 11, 2011, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services for Joe will be 11:00 am, Monday, January 17, 2011, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the services, at the funeral home. In LIEU of flowers: Memorials in Joe's name are being designated to Hospice of Jasper County, Monarch Wing and First Lutheran Church.
Joe, the son of Walter Lacey and Fern (Stephensen) Horn, was born February 29, 1916, in Newton. Joe was a graduate of the Newton Senior High, and had served his country with the US Army as a Captain in the Medical Corps, during World War II. Joe was employed in retail management in the lumber business.
On February 26, 1944, Joe was united in marriage with Genevieve Anderson in Topeka, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born, Janet and Judy. He devoted his life to his wife and family, and was a member of the Newton V.F.W. Post #1655 and the First Lutheran Church.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Genevieve; a sister Lois Walker and a brother David Frederick Horn.
Those left to honor Joe's memory include his two daughters: Janet I. (Gene) Nelson of Minneapolis, MN and Judy Ann Kussmaul of St. Croix,Virgin Islands; his two grandchildren: Angela Marie (Berent) Larson and Joel Brandon (Wendy) Nelson; two great-grandchildren; a brother Walter Herbert Horn of Newton; and his many friends.
Visitation with the family will be 9:30 - 11am at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., with Rev. Harold Vrankin officiating.
Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery, Newton.
