Obituary of Joann Oswalt

Joann Ruth Oswalt, the daughter of William W. and Hannah Marie (Owens) Barton, was born March 11, 1938 in Newton, Iowa.  She graduated from the Newton Senior High School with the class of 1956.

Joann was united in marriage with Phillip Paul Oswalt on December 7, 1973.  She had worked for the Maytag Company, Contel, GTE and Jasper County Savings Bank.  Joann loved her family, her grandkids, bowling, golfing, gardening and the Green Bay Packers and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Joann died on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at her home in Newton.  She was 82 years old.  Joann was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Phillip; her step father, Glenn Duffy; her brother, Leonard Barton and two sisters in infancy.

Those left to honor Joann’s memory include her daughters, Donna (David) Plumb and Tonya (Marty) Smith; her grandchildren, Brooke (Kyle) Swihart, Carter Smith, Brittnee (Matthew) Haynie and Cole Smith; her great grandchildren, Rossi Jo Swihart, Oliver Swihart and Luna Haynie; her sister, Betty Valentine and her sister-in-law, Norma Barton.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at the Newton Union Cemetery, Veteran’s Section.  The service is open to the public, but would ask that you wear your mask.  You may bring a lawn chair if you would like.  A Facebook broadcast of the service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on the Pence Reese Funeral Home & Cremation Services facebook page.  Memorials may be designated to the Wesley Life Hospice or the Courthouse Christmas Lighting Fund and may be left at the cemetery or at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home.
