Obituary of Dorothy May Marie Green
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy May Marie Green, the daughter of John Frances and Ellen (Mitrisin) Sodak, was born April 19, 1918 in Evans, Iowa. On January 4, 1941, she was united in marriage with Russell Glen Green in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Together they owned and operated Pettit Cleaners in Newton, Iowa. Dorothy was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and had been the oldest living member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Dorothy was known to her family as "Grandma Great", and that she was. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family. Hosting and cooking Sunday dinner for the whole family, with the 6 o'clock news and then the Wheel Of Fortune was a weekly routine. Dorothy was always up to date on the talk of the town. She treated everyone like family; knew everyone's names, their children's names, where they went to school, where they worked, and so on. At 102, she kept her mind sharp with word search puzzles. Her love of chocolates spread through the entire family, as did her love for cooking. She was especially known for her famous "candy" fudge she made around Christmas. Her family considered her the backbone of the family, and often joked that her key to a long life was to worry about them too much.
Dorothy died on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the Newton Healthcare Center. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell on May 14, 1977; and her brother, Irving Sodak. Those left to honor Dorothy's memory include her daughter, Marilyn Lamb; her sons, Ronald (Kathy) Green and Dennis Green; her grandchildren, Jill Anderson, Jon Lamb, Brandon (Angela) Green, Justina (Thad) Loeb, Natalie (Anthony) O'Hara; her great grandchildren, Drake Lamb, Haleigh (Nate) Lenz, Quintin Loeb, Maribelle Loeb, Rawley Loeb, Marley Loeb, Mitchell Wilson, Lincoln O'Hara, Jackson Maurer-Green; and a great-great grandson, due in July.
