Obituary of John Howard Gunsaulus

John Howard Gunsaulus, the son of Charles H. and Martha B. Gunsaulus, was born August 28, 1934 in Newton, Iowa.  John graduated from the Newton Senior High School with the class of 1954.

On November 23, 1956, John was united in marriage with Janet M. Thompson in Colfax, Iowa.

John worked at the Maytag Company in Newton, Iowa for 26 years.  He retired as an Inspector.  John enjoyed fishing, playing cards, reading both westerns and war stories and gardening.

John died on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Mercy One in Newton.  He was 84 years old.  John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Jack Rhone and Ron Thompson.

Those left to honor John’s memory include his wife, Janet; his sons, Randall (Vicki) Gunsaulus of Newton and Ronald (Teresa) Gunsaulus of Colfax; his daughter, Karen Gunsaulus of Colfax; his grandchildren, Michael (Michaela) Gunsaulus and their children, Madden, Miles and Mae; Matthew Gunsaulus (Jessa Dickinson); Molly (Dan) Brandhorst and their children, Brynn, Cole and Parker; Anna (Jon) Eichhorn; Chris (Sarah) Gunsaulus and their children, Brant and Elise; Curtis Vander Weide; Ashley Vander Weide; and Crystal Lincoln; his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Tom Clark; his sisters-in-law, Marilyn Rhone and Donna Thompson; his aunt, Frances Jontz and his many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton.  The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Wednesday, at the funeral home.  Memorials may be designated to the Colfax Public Library or the Colfax Fire Department and may be left at the funeral home.
