Don was a good friend of mine from high school and later college and our fraternity. He convinced me to play adult baseball and stuck by me when I didn't believe in myself. We had some absolutely wonderful times and I am going to miss him badly.

I was so sorry to learn of Don's passing. We grew up in Urbandale just a few blocks away from each other on 66th. When my daughter signed up for softball in the Raccoon Valley Little League, we learned that her coach was to be the same Don Dietz from Urbandale. I was fortunate enough to serve as one of his assistant coaches. Don was a great teacher and always patient with the girls on the team. His laid-back nature made him perfectly suited for dealing with opposing coaches and sometimes imprecise umpires. Years later, how fun it was to discover that he was the guard at the elevator door to the press box at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. I could count on at least one joke from him when I passed by on the way to my seat.
I hope that, in the days to come, family members and friends can find some peace by thinking of joy-filled memories of Don.

I met Don in 1990 through a mutual friend, Ron Hall. I just went through a divorce and had an extra room in my home for rent. Ron suggested Don and shortly thereafter became friends and a great roommate through difficult times. We had wild parties and lots of laughs at the house on Hackley Ave in Des Moines !!! While Don was doing Security at Wells Fargo, I was traveling all week marketing law enforcement equipment in Iowa and Illinois. I knew when I came home from living out of luggage all week, Don would be there eating his popcorn that he loved.
I am so sorry to read this morning of Don's passing. It is a reminder to us all to live life to it's fullest, and take nothing for granted, especially time , the greatest gift of all..............
Deepest sympathies,
Frank S. Waite
