Obituary of Mildred Evelyn Slycord

Funeral services for Mildred Tootie Slycord will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010, at the Pence - Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorials in Tootie's name are being designated to Hospice of Jasper County.
Mildred Evelyn Slycord, 84, the daughter of Glenn Woody, Sr. and Dorothy Ann (Granquist) Woody, was born January 14, 1926 in Newton, Iowa. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, she attended the Newton Senior High, Class of 1943.
On June 27, 1943, Tootie was united in marriage with Donald C. Slycord in Unionville, Missouri. To this union five children were born: Sherry, Donald W., Randy, Merriellen and Merrianne. She had devoted her life to her family and friends.
Tootie died Monday morning, August 30, 2010, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald on September 12, 2008; her daughter Sherry Smith, granddaughter Brandi Meyer; a sister Shirley Dop; and a brother Verland Beckham.
Those left to honor Tootie's memory include her children: Donald W. (Kathy) Slycord of Newton, Randy (Colette) Slycord of Redmond, Washington, Merriellen (Kenny) Meyer of Newton and Merrianne (Bob) Briese of Newton; her twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother Glenn Woody, Jr. of Newton.
Calling hours will be Thursday from Just prior to services at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., Newton, IA. The funeral will be Thursday at 3:00 at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, with Rev. Merle Smith, Chaplain officiating.
Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery, Newton on Thursday.
