Gordon L. Nelson
Gordon passed away September 30, 2017, at his home in rural Newton, under the care of hospice.
A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with a visitation one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Gordon's family, in his name.
Gordon LeRoy Nelson, 80, was born July 4, 1937, in Newton, the son of Bernie LeRoy and Betty Lou (Makis) Nelson. He had attended school in the Newton area. Gordon had served his country with the US Navy, during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
On May 5, 1960, Gordon was united in marriage to Myrtle Allene Cupples in Des Moines. He was a carpenter/farmer by trade, and enjoyed his family, fishing, hunting, wine making and woodworking. He was an Arborist by hobby (planting trees everywhere on his farm), and was a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post #355 in Kellogg.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 57 years, Myrtle Allene Nelson; his daughter Kimberly Nelson of Newton; his sons: Jerald W. (Laurie) Nelson of Newton and Kenneth L. (Kristi) Nelson of Newton; daughter Carla Buckles; his six grandchildren: Clint (Misty), Thomas, Jake, Kev, Hillary (Chris) and Cathy; and five great-grandchildren; sister Erma (Dale, who is deceased) Roseland of Marshalltown; his brother Delmar (Fern) Nelson of Kellogg; numerous nieces and nephews; and many good neighbors and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a beloved grandson Scott; and his son-in-law Andy Buckles.
