Funeral services for John W. Van Maanen, 95, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully. The Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements. A visitation with the family will be held from 5 until 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorials in John's name are being designated to: Sully Christian School or The Back to God Hour. Burial will be in the Sully Cemetery.
John W. Van Maanen, the son of Walter and Bertha (Van Deelen) Van Maanen, was born July 26, 1914, near Lynnville, Iowa. He attended the Sully Christian School.
On June 18, 1941, John was united in marriage with Jennie Nikkel in Sully, Iowa. Longtime residents of Sully, John had farmed in the Sully area. In 2000, he and Jennie made their home in the Newton area. He devoted his life to his family and friends, was a member of the Sully Christian Reformed Church and enjoyed reading.
John died Monday afternoon, July 19, 2010, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jennie on March 24, 2005; brother and sister-in-law: Teunis (Rika) Van Maanen; sisters and brothers-in-law: Artie (Cornie) Van Wyk and Minnie (Dick) Terpstra, brothers-in-law: Robert Zylstra, Edward and Wilbur Nikkel, and Fred Loynachan and sister-in-law: Jan Nikkel.
Those left to honor John's memory include his son John W. (Kathy) Van Maanen of Davenport, IA; his daughters: Bonnie (Vernon) Vander Weerdt of Sully, Betty (Bert) Polman of Grand Rapids, MI, Marva (John) Tolson of State Center, IA, Joy (John) McGinley of Newton, and Norma (Bill) Rozendaal of Grinnell, IA; his fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his many good friends.
Calling hours will be Wednesday; Visitation with the family will be from 5 - 8pm at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home, 310 N. 2nd Ave. E., Newton, IA. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 at Sully Christian Reformed Church, 103-9th Ave., Sully; with Rev. Brian Ochsner officiating.
Burial will be in Sully Cemetery, Sully on Thursday.
