I'm very sorry to read of Mr. Clayton's passing. He was one of my favorite teacher's in junior high. Being from my mom's hometown, I'll never forget when, in class, he pulled me aside to offer condolences for my great grandpa when he passed. Mr. Clayton was a great teacher and great person.

Thank you Mr. Clayton for spending your life caring about students and sharing your joy for history. You will always be one of my favorite teachers! Thank you for also bringing joy to my kids during Christmas when you would dress up like a certain jolly man from the North Pole. Your life made a difference! Thank you! You will be missed.

I majored in history at the University of Iowa, class of 1996. Mr. Clayton was my 8th grade history teacher. He is credited as being a strong influence in the area of history, as to why it became my college major, second only to my dad. He made history come alive for us, bringing us artifacts to look at like replica dueling pistols. I liked how it was more than just reading the textbook and watching films. When I graduated from Newton High School he was sent a graduation announcement and arrived a day later and gave me a desk caddy that I still use, full of pens and pencils. Teachers like Mr. Clayton are rare, and I would like to think there are others he influenced besides me.

Mr. Clayton was definitely one of my favorite teachers in junior high. I'll always remember the President's test we had at the end of the school year, I never studied so hard for a test!! Throughout the years seeing him out in the community, he always took time to speak with me. A wonderful man, he will be missed by his many, many students whose lives he touched over the years.

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Clayton's passing. I was an unremarkable and non memorable student of his in the 60's at Berg. Somehow he always remembered me and spoke to me by name every time he saw me. As a police officer I was involved in the Torch Run for Special Oympics since it's inception until my retirement, and I regularly saw Mr. Clayton at the run through Jasper County, either assisting with escorts for runners or hauling water in his truck to keep us cooland hydrated. He was very much a class act, and very likable gentleman. I spoke with him at Park Centre last week where we bumped into each other, with him again calling out to me by name. A fellow classmate of mine was within earshot, and after Russ left, we commented to each other on what a remarkably fine man he was. He will be missed.

Mr. Clayton was my favorite social studies teacher. Many times he'd take his time when I'd come down on study hall and help me. We'd always get into conversations about WWII or the Civil War, and he was soo interesting!! Always so knowledgeable. He will be so missed...
My condolences to his family.
