Mervin Hartson of Newton, passed from this life on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Newton Healthcare.
Mervin Dean Hartson, 91, was born January 22, 1925, near Waucoma, Iowa, the son of Namon and Doris (Mayo) Hartson. He attended rural Waucoma schools, and went on to serve his country with the US Navy during World War II, as a Seaman First Class.
On December 15, 1951, Mervin was united in marriage with Jean Nichols in Unionville, Missouri. To this union four children were born. For over 30 years he was employed by the Maytag Company, retiring in 1983 in the sheet metal and dryer department. Mervin was a good husband, father and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. He was a member of the Local UAW #997
Mervin is survived by his wife Jean of Prairie City; his daughter Sandy Steffen of King, NC; his sons: Dean (Lynda) Hartson of Brigham City, Utah, Terry (June) Hartson of Pella and Craig (Kitty) Hartson of Prairie City; his seven grandchildren: Jason, Jeremy, Josh, Nick, Paul, Lindsey and Chelsey; several great grandchildren; and his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Namoe and Doris Hartson.
A time of remembrance and funeral services will be held at a later date. Pence – Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in Mervin’s name with his family: to the Monroe Fire Department or a charity of your choosing.
