Funeral Services for Betty Scott, held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton. A visitation with the family will be held at 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials in Betty's name are being designated to; Disabled Veterans Association or to the Charity of your choice.
Betty Jean Scott, 86, was born July 3, 1922 in Jasper County, Iowa. She was the daughter and forth child of Harry and Rosa Belle (Hummel) Snook. The Snook family moved to Newton in 1934. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, she was a graduate of the Newton Senior High School, Class of 1939.
On September 16, 1945, Betty was united in marriage with O.T. Scott in Newton. She was employed, during World War II, as a defense worker at the Maytag Company. Betty had devoted her life to her husband, her two daughters Becky and Cathy, her family and friends. She and O.T. helped raise their eldest grandson, Scott. She was instrumental in the operation of O.T.'s trucking company, Rebel Supply. She found time to be the full time bookkeeper/accountant in addition to her duties as a homemaker. Betty enjoyed being with her family, reading, watching and getting involved in her grandkids Little League, playing pinochle, the Atlanta Braves, working in the garden, the Big Bands and music in general, and was a past member of TOPS.
Betty died on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband O.T. Scott on Jan. 10, 2006; her three sisters: Kathryn Gearhart, Anna Mae McClimen and Carolyn Williams; four brothers: John, Ted, Burton and Lawrence "Butch" Snook; and brothers-in-law: Dale Gearhart and Harold McClimen.
Those left to honor Betty's memory include her daughters: Becky Myrick of Newton and Cathy (David) Sellers of Garland, Texas; her three grandsons: Scott (Regina) VerSteeg, John (Erika) Myrick and David Myrick; three great-grandsons: Alex, Dakota and Nicholas; a brother Howard (Helen) Snook of Newton; sisters-in-law: Dee Snook, Phyllis Snook and Judy Snook, all of Newton; many nieces and nephews; and her many good friends.
Rev. Mark Young of Newton is officiating.
Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery, Newton on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
