Obituary of Robert L. Leatherman

Robert L. Leatherman, the son of Gerald E. and Alcy Louise Miller (Lair) Leatherman, was born December 31, 1932 in Newton, Iowa. Bob graduated from the Newton High School in 1952. He served his country in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1956. Bob worked as a welder for Winpower and at Farm Hand in Grinnell. On July 2, 1971, Bob was united in marriage with Dorothy Johnson at the Izaak Walton League in Newton. Bob enjoyed helping others and was involved in many volunteer projects. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Newton Post # 1655, the U.A.W. Local #997 retirees union of which he held leadership roles, was a past member of the Izaak Walton League and a former little league coach. He enjoyed his family, fishing and the outdoors. Bob died on Friday, May 7, 2010, at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was 77 years old. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy and his brother, Eugene. Those left to honor Bob's memory include his son Rick (Lisa) Leatherman of Van Horne, Iowa; his step-son, Carl "Sonny" Johnson; his step-daughter, Lucille Schwarts; six grandchildren; several great grandchildren and his brother, David Leatherman of Redondo Beach, CA.
