Obituary of Alice Roosevelt Garlock

Alice Garlock, a nearly lifetime resident of the Newton area entered The Church Triumphant January 2, 2015, in Madison Heights, Michigan, at the age of 105. She had been living with and near her daughter for the past ten years in Oak Park, Michigan. Alice was born in Malaka Township, NE of Newton, Iowa on August 15, 1909 to Oscar Edwin and Minnie (Riffenberg) Korff. She also lived in Sherman and Mound Prairie Townships before moving to Newton in 1949. After graduating from Newton High School in 1927, she taught in Jasper County rural schools for ten years. Her employment in Newton was at the Iowa State Telephone Co., Winpower Mfg. Co., and McLaughlin-Johnson Jewelers, later Johnson Jewelers and Herteen Jewelers, from which she retired in 1981. Through the years Alice was a member of Palo Alto Grange, Home Economics Club (HEC), Business and Professional Women (BPW), Newton Woman's Club, Clio Club, and various groups in her church, First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, and being with her family. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Kay (Russell) Ayers, of Oak Park, Michigan; grandson, Mark Edgren (Laura) Ayers, great-grandson, Rune, and great-granddaughter, Malea, of Kailua, Hawaii; and step-family Dorothy (Morden) McFadden of Cedar Falls, Kathi and Kerry McFadden. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Vergil Garlock, former husband Ernest Edgren, and step-grandson, Brian McFadden. Her funeral will be Fri., January 9, at 11:00 am at First Lutheran Church, preceded by visitation with the famly at 10:00 am, with interment in Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to First Lutheran Church, Jasper County Historical Society, or Project AWAKE.
