Please know that we are thinking of you all at this difficult time. Aunt Mary was a beautiful woman, with a brilliant smile. She always made us feel so welcome when we visited your lovely home. Mary paved the way for us to have a fulfilled life in Newton. Her gracious, loving presense welcomed us and nurtured us while there. Her invitation to use our talents and gifts to serve Progress Industries gave purpose and joy to our lives.
Our spirits soared with her spirit and we loved our God more because of her and with her.
Thank you for sharing her with us dear Lee. We give thanks and praise that one day we will be with her.
May the God of all comfort hold you all in the Palm of His Hands. We love you.

Some of my earliest memories of Mary were when I got to accompany my mom over to the Zmolek's to help with Stuart's patterning. Even as a small child I could recognize what a kind, caring, and extraordinary woman Mary was. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family! May God bless and keep you during this sad time.

Dear Lee and family,
When I think of Mary, I think 'classy lady'. She wore a warm smile and she had kind eyes. I have many fond memories of getting to go out to the Zmolek's, you knew it was going to be a fun day. The rocket ship, the dog named 'What'(?), the kids were all so nice, and Mary and Lee always made us feel welcome. That had to be a big day for them to have the whole Hummel clan for the day, yet I remember many fun filled trips 'out to the Zmolek's'. Loved them!
This earth lost a beauty, but I like to think that Heaven received one who will help 'paint the Heavens' to prepare them for sharing with her loved ones some day.
Love and Sympathy to all,
Becky (Hummel) Dittmer

Dear Lee and family,
My heart goes out to all of you. Mary was indeed a person who always put others before herself. I will always remember the delightful conversations we had. The times I would see her at Progress Industries and being able to just say hello. Mary was a very special person to me and I'll never forget her beautiful smile and loving spirit.
Lee, you have certainly shown us all what it means to love someone. I'll always remember how you served Mary and I when we visited - making sure we had our tea. I only wish I would have taken more opportunities to visit her -this I will always regret.
I look forward to having tea with her in heaven.
With love and prayers,
Carol

Lee and Family,
Seeing your family at Sacred Heart while I was growing up consoled me many times as our family dealt with all the emotions of my disabled sister at Glenwood State School.
I admired Lee and Mary's grit and their work of inclusiveness for the disabled.
Mary was a wonderful lady and mother. I am so sorry she has passed on but she has left a big legacy with her life's work.

My dear Mary, I only wish I would have told you so many more times how much I cared about you and loved you. You are so kind and I always loved your smile and your beautiful loving innocent face and the way your giving and caring heart showed through those beautiful eyes.
I will miss you greatly and a piece of my heart is missing, but I have beautiful and loving memories of you and the fun times and little talks we would have.
You are dear to my heart and your memory will last my lifetime and until we meet again on that beautiful shore of heaven.
Please save a spot beside you for me, at the table in heaven and we can sit across from Lee and Andrea.
I miss you already.
Your friend and neighbor.

Dear Zmolek Family,
Mary was my connection with Dimitar Krustev. For one year I came to the Zmolek home on Saturdays from Knoxille and later in the following six years, commuted from Ames to Dimitar's Des Moines Studio. At that time I was known as Carolyn and later adopted a nickname. At one time I stayed overnight at your home.
Later I moved to Monticello, MN and attended a four-year course at Atelier LeSueur in the Cities. It was Mary's invitation to take classes from Dimitar that launched my artistic journey.
I am so grateful for her gentle encouragement and am saddened by her passing into eternal bliss. Mary has a lasting lovely memory in my soul.
Sincerely and with sympathy,
Carolyn (Carrie) Link, PBVM
