S. Robert Payne, the son of Simeon M. and Mary Dunlap Payne, was born October 21, 1921 in Farrar, Iowa. Bob was proud to serve in the United States Marines during World War II. He worked for the Maytag Company for thirty-seven years as a service manager and in recruiting and training. Bob was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton for 61 years. He enjoyed many years of membership at the Newton Country Club and golfed until just a few years ago. Bob was a sportsman who also enjoyed tennis and water skiing. He is most admired by his family as one who truly cared for others in both word and deed. Bob died on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center. He was 89 years old. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of forty-seven years, Jean; and his second wife, Miriam. Those left to honor Bob's memory include his son, Doug (Pam) of Boulder, CO; his daughter, Marijo (Richard) Graversen of Golden Valley, MN and his son, John of Newton; his five grandchildren; his two step grandchildren and his three great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton. Memorials may be designated to the Congregational United Church of Christ or hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the church or at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home.
