
Obituary of Joy Oswalt
Josephine Joy Oswalt, the daughter of Arnold Franklin Burnett and Vera Mildred (Pence) Burnett, was born March 06, 1930, in Newton, Iowa. She attended Newton Schools and graduated from Newton Senior High School with the Class of 1948. On May 29, 1948, Joy was united in marriage to Glen Oswalt in the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, Iowa and together they celebrated 70 years of marriage.
Joy worked in clothing sales and as office manager for Younkers in Newton for over 20 years. Joy loved to go dancing with Glen and together they won several competitions. She enjoyed music, especially the Big Bands and Ole Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra. Joy was an active woman who enjoyed roller skating and swimming. She was an active member of the Community of Christ Church and loved being involved with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Joy died on March 21, 2025, while surrounded by the love of her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen Oswalt, her daughter Sharla Oswalt, her grandson Ryan Peters, her step-mother Harriet Burnett and her brother Ronald Burnett.
Joy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Glenna and Gene Patterson of Newton, grandchildren Brock (Sara) Patterson, Amber (Randall) Allen, DaNae (Michael) Peters, Mia (Trevor) Senclair, Brice (Kristen) Peters; great-grandchildren Kennedy Patterson, Logan (Ashley) Paylor, Emilee Paylor, Zeke Peters, Kai Peters, Maddox Peters, Elise (Vincent) Bennett, Addy Senclair, Calvin Peters, great-great-grandchildren Casper Gillum-Paylor, Bailey Gillum-Paylor, Waylon Bennett and many nieces and nephews.
