Obituary of Virgil E Redding

Virgil, formerly of Kellogg, went home to be with his Savior on Thursday, November 2, 2017, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. 

A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newton.  The Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements.  Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the services, and burial will be in Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Kellogg Historical Society, Kellogg Fire Department, or St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.

Virgil E. Redding, 98, was born October 26, 1919, near Kellogg, the son of George and Ellen (Johnson) Redding.  He attended the Kellogg school. 

On March 18, 1938, Virgil was united in marriage to Marie Hartgers in Sully.  To this union three children were born, Francis, Joan and Carol.

Virgil was a Tool & Die Maker, employed by the Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg, and retiring after 42 years of service.  He also was the Assistant Kellogg Fire Department’s Fire Chief, for 36 years.  Virgil enjoyed his family, and was a member of the Farm Bureau, Iowa Firefighters Association and St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. 

Virgil is survived by his daughters: Joan (Gary) Olson of Grinnell and Carol (Carl) Pickett of Ankeny; his daughter-in-law: Connie Skates of Kellogg; his grandchildren: Roger, Russ, Billy, Tami, Jim and Angie; great-grandchildren: Erik, Revé, Joseph, Morgan, Zach, Jolisa and Andrew; his great-great grandchildren: Amariana, Kamden, Kaly, Madison, Carter; and a sister, Virginia Ashby. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 79 years, Marie, on July 27, 2017; his son, Francis, in 1960; and his two brothers.
